How to play

One Piece

Two captains, one DON!! bank, and a race to zero life.

How it feels

A One Piece game is a short, punchy race. You attach DON!! like extra muscle, swing at life, and hope your Counter cards in hand are enough. It plays faster than a long Commander night and more like a boxing match with a shared mana pile.

How you win

Drop your opponent’s life to 0, then win one more battle against their Leader. You can also win if they cannot draw at the start of their turn.

What you need

Sit down with this

A 50-card deck, one Leader card, ten DON!! cards, and a way to track rested (turned sideways) cards. Sleeves help. A playmat is optional. Starter decks already include a Leader, a legal list, and DON!! — that is the right first box.

Sit the Leader in front of you. Shuffle the 50-card deck. Life cards equal the Leader’s printed life sit face-down in a pile — do not look. DON!! start off to the side, not in the deck. Draw five. The player who goes first takes one DON!! on turn one and skips that first draw.

The table

Where cards live

  • Leader area

Your Leader stays here the whole game. It can attack. It takes the last hit after life is gone.

  • Character area

Characters you play rest here. They attack, block, and get KO’d into the trash.

  • Cost area (DON!!)

DON!! you add each turn live here. Rest them to pay costs, or attach them to a Leader or Character as power.

  • Hand

Hidden. Events, extra Characters, and Counter cards wait here until you spend them.

  • Life

Face-down cards from your deck. When you take a hit, the top life card flips into your hand.

  • Deck and trash

Draw from the deck. KO’d Characters, used Events, and discarded cards go to the trash. Empty deck at draw = loss.

  • Stage area

At most one Stage. It stays until something replaces or removes it.

A turn

Do these in order

  1. 01

    Refresh

Stand your rested cards and DON!! so they can work again. Attached DON!! stay attached unless a card says otherwise.

  2. 02

    Draw

Take the top card of your deck. The player who goes first skips this on turn one.

  3. 03

    DON!!

Add two DON!! to your cost area (one on the first turn). You will rest them later to pay costs or attach them as power.

  4. 04

    Main

Play Characters and Events, set a Stage, attach DON!!, and attack with your Leader or Characters.

  5. 05

    End

Unused DON!! stay in the cost area. Characters you just played usually cannot attack this turn.

The cards

What you are looking at

  • Leader

Always in play. Sets your life, colors, and the last life you have to defend.

    What it does
Your captain. It is not in the 50-card deck. It attacks, takes the final hit, and tells you which colors you may play.
    When you play it
Before the game starts — you choose one Leader and build the deck around its colors and life.
    Beginner trap
Building a pile that ignores the Leader’s color. Off-color cards are not playable. Also: forgetting the Leader can attack every turn once it is ready.

  • Character

Stays on the field. Power fights power. KO’d Characters go to the trash.

    What it does
Your crew on the board. They attack, they can block, and they carry DON!! as extra power.
    When you play it
On your turn, during Main, if you can rest enough DON!! to pay the cost in the top-left. They usually cannot attack the turn they enter.
    Beginner trap
Attacking with a Character you just played, or leaving a blocker rested so it cannot rest again to block.

  • Event

A one-shot from hand. Counter Events can be played during a battle to swing the numbers.

    What it does
A spell. You play it, it does the text, it goes to the trash. Counter Events are your mid-battle answers.
    When you play it
Main-phase Events on your turn. Counter Events when you are in a battle and the card says Counter — usually after attackers and blockers are in.
    Beginner trap
Forgetting Counter cards in hand and taking a life you could have saved, or paying DON!! for a Counter you no longer have standing.

  • Stage

A lasting board piece — extra DON!!, extra power, or a rule that stays in play.

    What it does
A location. You play one and it sits in the Stage area until something replaces it.
    When you play it
On your turn, during Main, for its DON!! cost. You may only have one Stage.
    Beginner trap
Playing a second Stage and wondering where the first went — the new one replaces it. Also: treating a Stage like a Character that can attack.

Combat and keywords

The verbs

  • Attack

Rest a standing Leader or Character, pick a target (Leader or a rested Character). Then blocker, then Counter, then compare power.

  • Block

A standing Character with Blocker may rest to take the hit instead of the original target.

  • Counter

From hand, during battle, if the card says Counter. Pays DON!!, changes power or KOs, then goes to the trash.

  • DON!! attach

Move DON!! from the cost area onto a Leader or Character. +1000 power each. Those DON!! are not free to rest for costs until they come back.

  • Rush / Double Attack / Banish

Rush: can attack the turn it is played. Double Attack: if the attack lands on life, they take two life. Banish: the KO’d card is removed from the game instead of trash.

Ways to play

Pick a table

  • Constructed

Anyone heading to a store event, or anyone who wants a “real” list.

50 cards, one Leader, official ban list. Locals and regionals play this.

  • Kitchen table

New players, siblings, and anyone who just opened a box.

Same bones, looser lists. Teach with two starters or the official app first.

Print finish

Same card, different row

Treatments do not change the rules text. They do change the catalog row — tap a finish to shop it, or open the desk note to see why collectors pay extra.

  • Normal

The set printing. Same rules text as the flashier versions.

Legal in a deck. This is the copy most lists actually sleeve.

  • AA / alt art

Alternate illustration of the same card. Legal; collectors pay extra for the art.

Same card for play. You may sleeve an AA in a constructed deck.

  • Manga

Panel-style art, usually the chase. Same card for play.

Same card for constructed. The art does not add an effect.

  • SP / Super parallel

Super parallel — a premium treatment of an existing card, not a new effect.

Legal as the underlying card. Not a new name.

    Finish note →See printings →

  • Parallel

Extra foil or layout of the same collector number. Still that card for constructed.

Same card. Finish is collectible, not a rules change.
